One City's Strategy: San Francisco's Transitional Youth Task Force

Volume 1 Issue 1 Spring 2007
San Francisco's Mayor Gavin Newsom

My vision in creating the Transitional Youth Task Force is to ensure that all youth will make a successful transition from adolescence to adulthood. One of the key components of this goal is to improve young people's connections to housing, employment, education and social supports.

The task force has been established to bring a broad spectrum of systems, providers, CBOs, and youth together for up to two years to accomplish the following functions:

  • Gathering data to identify and better understand the needs and status of transitional aged youth in San Francisco.
  • Evaluating available resources including, current and potential funding sources, existing programs, other task forces and coalitions, key research and reports, etc.
  • Recommending select system-wide policy and budget changes to address gaps in service and better leverage resources.

This Transitional Youth Task Force is reflective of my dedication to providing the city's youth with the necessary services and programs that will benefit them as they transition into productive and contributing adults. It is important that they are connected to the venues where their youthful perspectives may be nurtured and embraced. I recognize the importance of their viewpoint and appreciates that the future of our youth is vital to the future of our city.
